Great writing, this Substack has been a huge blessing in 2023, here’s my small rise above offering, I ran the family business with my dad, when he died 5 years ago, the company was in serious debt, both my CFO and controller left the company within 6 months of his death, I did a moral inventory to weigh where I was the problem, I was always the “sales” guy, a mile wide but an inch deep, so I got my hands dirty in making sure that no one understood the budget and the revenue better than me, I wrote up a business plan to focus on one part of the business that we were really good at, so I had a plan, then I set up achievable weekly goals to become elite at this one thing, long story short, Covid hits, and that 1 thing exploded overnight, I watched the tv show “The Bear”, it’s basically a story about a kid that inherits a doomed business, he even says he thought the inheritance was basically another “F U” from the grave, until he finds he was actually sitting on a potential gold mine, which is probably true for a lot of people, if you can scrape away the rust and the bad habits that kept you down, you just might be sitting on a gold mine. Anyway, Merry Christmas
Yes, that’s why I’m kind of embarrassed even bringing it up, because my dad did give me a ton of know how, and the specific part of our work that took off after Covid was his 50 year expertise, I think what I figured out in a moment of desperation was that our company had become to scattershot, we need to focus
I'm a former editor and I know good writing. You're a darn good writer Chris.
